Friday Fun

Today was SUPER FUN Friday Fun day! In the kitchen, students made dinosaur eggs using grated ivory soap and a mini plastic dinosaur. What squishy, slimy mess, but there were sure a lot of clean hands!

The kindergarteners also finished sewing their dinosaur stuffies. These turned out adorable! The students sharpened their fine motor skills by sewing a running stitch around their dino. I am thankful for the extra parent volunteers who helped out today. Sewing with five year olds is so much easier when there is one adult per child!

My activity today was making dinosaur Shrinky Dinks! Of course I had to share Shrink Dink stories from my childhood with the students.  I LOVED shrinky dinks!

These sure did shrink!

Students also played a coding game with Bee Bots.  I will do a blog post on Bee Bots soon!

Pizzas, Stuffies, and More!

On a wet, squishy Friday, there’s no better activity than Friday Fun! We got right to it!

Students began their dinosaur stuffie project. The first step was for each student to sketch a dinosaur on a piece of paper.

They traced their sketch with Sharpie.

Next, we placed a piece of fabric over the top and had them recreate their sketch on the fabric using fabric markers.

Third, students added color and details!

Next week, students will sew a piece of fabric to the back of their drawing, stuff it with poly fill, and be snuggling with a dinosaur stuffie!

In the kitchen, students whipped up dinosaur pizza while enjoying a read aloud:

It was extra special to have a warm snack on this cold, wet day!

Friday Fun

We were busy during today’s Friday Fun. In the kitchen, students made festive Santa berries to share with our third grade buddies later in the day at our buddy party.

Here’s the easy recipe:

At the craft station, students began the process of making gingerbread crystal ornaments! I am so excited about this activity. First students used a colored pipe cleaner to make the shape of a gingerbread.

Next we measured a cup of Borax and poured it (while holding our breath!) into a mason jar. I then added three cups of boiling water, stirred it up, and placed the pipe cleaner creation in the solution.

Here is what it is going to look like on Monday! (fingers crossed!)

Yay for Friday!

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year!

The Gingerbread Unit has arrived, and on what a perfect day, Friday Fun Day! The activities today were all about the classic book, The Gingerbread Boy. In the Book Nook, students listened to the story on CD. The craft activity today was making a gingerbread boy/girl using a marble painting technique. We put paint in the corners of a box top, added a gingerbread cut out and some marbles, and created some fun gingerbread people!

Next week students will decorate their gingerbread people….just wait and see!

In the kitchen we made gingerbread balls. Boy did they smell delicious!

Friday Fun was followed by the formal introduction to the unit. We discussed the characteristics of a folktale and even the history of the gingerbread cookie! Next week I will begin reading aloud some of the many different versions of this classic tale.

Edible Spiders

We are running with the spider theme for our Friday Fun centers! Today students made spider rocks and spider pizzas…yummy!

Can you tell which one is mine?

We started the process of making spider rocks. The students painted their rocks and made eight spider legs. Once the rocks dry, we will glue on the legs and eyes.

We played learning games for the other two activities. First, students enjoyed the game of Avalanche, where they have to collect different colored fruit using tweezers. This is a great game for building fine motor skills.

The second game we played was Candyland…with a twist! Students had to identify the colors in Spanish and repeat the color word as they moved their Candyland piece. This was a great way to reinforce Spanish in the homeroom classroom.

Friday Fun with Dinosaurs!

The next six weeks, Friday Fun will be all about dinosaurs! These are some of my favorite activities to plan. Today, students made sparkly dinosaur necklaces….glitter makes EVERYTHING look better, right?! The students loved painting on the modge podge and sprinkling (or really dumping) the glitter over their terrible lizards!

But here’s my favorite….

We couldn’t convince everyone to follow the recipe 🙂

Friday Fun

We did our first sewing activity today in Friday Fun! Using fabric with owls on it, students hand sewed small pillows. I was impressed with the students’ focus and patience, as each pillow took twenty minutes to sew!

The reward was stuffing the pillow with polyfill and then snuggling with it, of course! What a sense of accomplishment the students showed!

A BIG thank you to the moms and Ms. Horibe, who helped with this station.

In the kitchen, students were making Snowy Owls using mini rice cakes, cream cheese, pretzel rods, raisins, and two little jellybeans. Students got to listen to two informative stories on owls as they worked.

Look how cute these turned out!
