50 Days of Learning!

It’s hard to believe we already had 50 days of learning in kindergarten! When we returned from break yesterday, students entered a 50s-style diner and were ready to rock and roll.

Everyone came dressed in costume!

Ms. Herrera wore a poodle skirt that her mom made many years ago!

We started our five-center rotations right away. I changed the activities up this year, and I have to say, these 50th-day centers were the best yet!

Kindergarten Diner: At the diner, students used 50s-style cars to zoom the number of syllables in words. They then colored the correct number of cars as there were syllables and recorded the word.

Here are the cars we used:

Locker Room: In the Locker Room, students looked at letterman jackets with images. They had to identify the beginning sound in each picture and match it to the corresponding letterman jacket.

Sweet Shop: Students at the Sweet Shop had to scoop ice cream! Using a double ten frame, students chose a cup of ice cream (pom poms) and scooped each onto a ten frame. They then counted how many scoops there were and recorded the two-digit number.

We used these melon ballers as scoopers….this was a great fine motor strengthening activity!

Bubble Blowing: This is always a fun center! Students learn how to blow a bubble! Then, we created a class graph showing how many students could and could not blow a bubble. The first step is chewing the gum so it softens. We had BIG pieces, so it took a lot of hard work!

Next, we flattened the piece against the roof of our mouth and then moved it to our tongue. Finally, we blew a little air into it!

Here are our results:

Shake, Rattle, and Roll: At this engaging center, students rolled two dice. Then, the number rolled on each die was recorded and added together. A fun hack to keep the dice from flying everywhere is to put the dice into little containers from the Dollar Tree. Take a look:

Early finishers had so much fun playing this ice cream game. It is another fun way to strengthen fine motor skills!

In the afternoon, students learned how to dance the Hand Jive!

And we enjoyed root beer floats! Yum!

I am excited to see what the next 50 days bring us!

 

Yay for the 50th day!

We turned back time on our 50th day of school! The kindergarteners enjoyed spending their day in the Shake Shack!

I also drove to school in a 1955 Chevy.

There were five different activities set up around the classroom and outside for the students to explore. But first, they had to check-in for the day.

They loved seeing their characters!

Next, on to the activities! First up is the Bubble Blowing Station! Students had to graph whether or not they could blow a bubble.

It was such fun watching the children chomping on their gum, trying to learn how to blow a bubble!

Another station was “Read a Record.” I made a 1950’s style jukebox and cut a hole near the top. Then I created 50 records with CVC words written on them. Students read the words on the records and put them in the jukebox!

 

There was also a photo booth with 1950’s themed props.

 

Dice Race was next. Who would roll the dice and get to 50 the fastest?

How about the paddle ball station? Students decorated a paddle ball and then learned how to play! It took such concentration.

 

Finally, the 50 Second activity was a blast. Students had 50 seconds to do each activity, from hula hooping to bunny hopping. They recorded how many of each activity they could do in 50 seconds.

We ended this fabulous day with banana splits!

50th Day HOORAY!

We have been having a blast celebrating our 50th day of school! The kindergarteners came to school dressed up like people did in the 1950’s.

The classroom was transformed into a diner!

There was even a drive-in!

At our Sock Hop students read records and slid them into the jukebox.

They played with jacks, hula hooped, played with paddle balls…

and tried to do a bunch of things in 50 seconds. Here is the recording sheet the students used:

We ended our Sock Hop with a delicious banana split!

It’s hard to believe that in 50 more days we will celebrate our 100th day of school!

 

Happy 50th Day!

We had our 50th day of school celebration the Friday before Thanksgiving break, and boy what a fun day it was! Students were encouraged to come to school dressed in clothes from the 1950’s.

We spent the morning learning comparing items like telephones, furniture, clothing, and cars from today to the 1950’s. It was fun to see the students’ reactions when they saw a computer from the 1950’s that took up an entire room and compared it to my iMac! Students also made 50 tally marks, counted to 50 by twos, fives, and tens, and more!

The day ended with a Sock Hop, where students danced, played Frisbee and paddle ball, hula hooped, and learned how to play jacks and pick up sticks.

Of course, no Sock Hop is complete without a banana split from the shake shop!
